Experienced technicians can often diagnose a motor problem before opening it — just by listening. The sound a motor makes is a reliable early warning. This field guide maps common motor sounds to their likely causes.
1. Loud Humming, Not Turning
A motor that hums but does not start points to a failed capacitor (single-phase), single phasing (three-phase), or a jammed load. Switch off immediately to avoid burnout.
2. Grinding or Rumbling
A rough grinding or rumbling noise from the bearing area almost always means bearing failure — worn, dry, or damaged bearings. Catch it early before the bearing seizes and damages the shaft.
3. High-Pitched Squeal
A squealing sound often indicates a dry or under-lubricated bearing, or in belt-driven setups, a slipping belt. Re-grease the bearing or check the belt.
4. Regular Knocking or Clicking
A rhythmic knock, once per revolution, suggests something loose — a loose rotor, damaged fan, foreign object, or loose coupling. Inspect before it worsens.
5. Excessive Electrical Buzz
A strong electrical buzz can indicate voltage imbalance, loose stator laminations, or winding issues. Combined with vibration, it may point to an electrical fault.
6. Beyond Listening
Sound is an excellent early warning, but confirm with proper diagnostics — vibration analysis, current measurement, and insulation testing pinpoint the exact fault. Trending these over time catches problems before failure.
