Flameproof Motor Buying Guide for Indian Industries

Flameproof motors protect against explosions in hazardous atmospheres — essential in refineries, chemical plants, paint units, and pharma. Buying the wrong specification is both a safety and a legal risk. This guide covers what Indian industrial buyers must specify.

1. What "Flameproof" Means

A flameproof (Ex d / Ex db) motor has a heavy enclosure engineered to contain any internal explosion and cool escaping gases below ignition temperature — preventing the surrounding atmosphere from igniting. It is one of several hazardous-area protection types.

2. Specify the Zone

  • Zone 1: Explosive gas likely during normal operation — flameproof (Ex d) is standard
  • Zone 2: Gas unlikely, brief if present — increased safety (Ex e) or non-sparking (Ex ec) may suffice

3. Specify the Gas Group

  • IIA: Propane, most refineries
  • IIB: Ethylene, chemical plants
  • IIC: Hydrogen, acetylene — the most demanding; a IIC motor also covers IIA and IIB

4. Temperature Class

The motor's maximum surface temperature must stay below the auto-ignition temperature of the atmosphere — specified as T1 (450°C) through T6 (85°C). Match this to your process gases.

5. PESO Certification Is Mandatory in India

For Indian hazardous-area installations, PESO (Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation) approval is legally required. IECEx and ATEX certificates support the specification but PESO is the Indian mandate. Always insist on valid PESO documentation.

6. What to Give Your Supplier

Zone, gas group, temperature class, IP rating, power/speed, mounting, and PESO requirement. BES supplies CG/Crompton flameproof motors with full PESO and IECEx documentation.
