Large Synchronous Motors for Constant-Speed High-Power Applications

Synchronous Motors run at exact synchronous speed dictated by supply frequency and pole count — making them the preferred choice for compressor, mill, mixer, and pump drives where constant speed and power factor correction matter. Unlike induction motors, synchronous machines can operate at unity or leading power factor, contributing reactive power compensation to the plant electrical system.

Bombay Engineering Syndicate supplies Crompton synchronous motors deployed in cement plants, paper mills, refineries, marine propulsion, large air compressors, and process industry applications across India. Available with brushless excitation (standard) or static excitation systems, these motors deliver high efficiency (typically 96-98%), inherent power factor improvement, and excellent overload capability.

Power ratings range from 500 kW to over 15 MW at standard HV ratings 3.3 kV, 6.6 kV, 11 kV, and 13.8 kV. Pole configurations from 4-pole through 60-pole accommodate speeds from 100 rpm to 1500 rpm. Construction includes salient-pole or cylindrical-rotor design, forced-air or water cooling (IC81W, IC86W), brushless rotating exciter, and complete instrumentation including stator/rotor RTDs, bearing temperature sensors, and vibration probes.
